The January to May 2009 fiscal deficit of the national government (NG) of an alarming P123.2 billion signifies that the country is on the verge of a renewed fiscal crisis. Among others this underscores the need to revisit the country’s debt policy up to the maximum of outright debt cancellation to free up domestic resources for dealing with the raging crisis.

The National Statistics Office (NSO) reported a surprising 1.5 million jobs created in April 2009 from the same period last year, but some 1.3 million appear to be low-earning and insecure.

Falling Remittances Foretell Gloomier Consumption, Growth

Remittance from overseas Filipinos continued to slow in with year-on-year growth of just 2.2% in April which is down from 3.1% in March and 4.9% in February, according to newly-released data from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP). According to research group IBON, this foretells further depressed consumption and growth in the economy as well as deteriorating welfare for millions of remittance-dependent households around the country.

The Philippines has started to enter into what is effectively a recession since last year, according to research group IBON Foundation. This is considering not just the steeply dropping growth rates but also the rising joblessness and poverty in the country.
